San Antonio International Airport - All Information on San Antonio International Airport (SAT)

San Antonio International Airport is located 8 mi/13 km north of downtown San Antonio, Texas, USA in the Uptown Central San Antonio area. The international airport’s IATA code is SAT and the ICAO code is KSAT.

The airport also goes by the name SAT Airport, after the IATA code and San Antonio Airport. It is owned by the City of San Antonio and the operator is the San Antonio Aviation Department. The airport serves Greater San Antonio.

San Antonio Airport has three runways, one asphalt and two concrete. The asphalt runway is 5,519 ft/1,682 m long while the concrete runways are 8,505 ft/2,592 m and 8,502 ft/2,591 m respectively.

The airport saw 4,028,564 passengers come through it in 2020, a decrease from over 10,000,000 in 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

SAT was founded in 1941 through a project called San Antonio Municipal Airport, but the unfinished airport was soon in federal government service due to World War II and the need for aviation training. It opened as Alamo Field in July of 1942 and was used as a training base for the United States Army Air Force. As the war ended the airport was returned to the City of San Antonio for civil use.

Terminal 2 was built in the early 1950’s as were a baggage claim area and the FAA control tower and a new satellite concourse was also built, containing jet bridge gates and passenger waiting areas.

In the 1970’s an Airport Master Plan was set into motion with the plans for a new Terminal and a parking garage. The new terminal, then called Terminal 1 now known as Terminal A, was completed in 1984 bringing the airport’s gate capacity up from eight to 27 gates. A new FAA Air Traffic Control was built in a new location in 1986.

A second Airport Master Plan was developed in the mid-1990’s including major updates such as more parking spaces in a new parking garage, improved access to the airport and two new terminals to replace the old Terminal 2, increasing the gate capacity to 35 gates. Terminal 2 closed in November of 2010 when the new Terminal B opened. This was also when Terminal 1 was renamed Terminal A.

The 3-story short term parking garage dating back over 30 years was closed and demolished to make way for a new 7-story parking garage and Consolidated Rental Car Facility housing short term parking and up to 14 rental car brands. By January 2018 it was in use by both the public and the rental car companies.

In current times the gate number of the airport’s terminals is at a total of 24 jet bridge gates with 17 in Terminal A and eight in Terminal B. International movements tend to take place in Terminal B.
